Conferencia: Preservation Planning: Ensuring that digital content remains accessible in the future

El próximo viernes, día 12, a las 11:30, en la Sala de Juntas del DSIC, el Prof. Dr. Andreas Rauber, de la T.U. Vienna, impartirá la charla «Preservation Planning: Ensuring that digital content remains accessible in the future».

The rapid changes in technology in today’s information landscape have considerably shortened the lifespan of digital objects. While analogue objects such as photographs or books directly represent the content, digital objects are useless without the technical environment for which they were designed. In contrast to a book, word processor documents cannot be read, a simulation cannot be re-run and re-evaluated, and sensor data cannot be interpreted without the right hardware, software and documentation environment. Digital objects are under threat at several levels: media failure, file format and tool obsolescence, or the loss of necessary metadata. Especially for born-digital material this often means that the contained information is lost completely. Digital preservation has thus become a pressing challenge for any kind of IT-related operation.

This talk will review the challenges in digital preservation and summarize the main strategies deployed to counter the risk of loss. It will then move on to discuss the need for planning preservation actions in order to ensure optimal preservation of digital objects. It will present a workflow and according tool support to concisely define the requirements and evaluate available options in a tractable manner as required by current audit and certification initiatives.
